When you have cosmetic issues with the shape of your teeth, or have permanent discoloration, then you may need cosmetic dentistry. We can often address these concerns in only one visit with dental bonding and contouring. In today’s blog, your Garland, TX, dentist talks about our approach to cosmetic dentistry.
Your Cosmetic Consultation
We start with an initial consultation. We want to talk to you about your smile and your concerns, and we also want to thoroughly examine your teeth with digital imaging technology. This enables us to assess the cause and extent of your esthetic issue. We may treat underlying factors behind your esthetic issues, such as teeth grinding, and select the best esthetics solutions to correct the appearance of your smile. For some, this could involve dental bonding and contouring, which transform the shape and color of the teeth in only one visit.
Dental Bonding
Dental bonding takes one visit and involves the same composite resin we employ as part of our tooth-colored dental fillings. Composite resin is a blend of glass-like and acrylic particles, and can be shaded to blend with the rest of your smile seamlessly. We start the process by numbing the tooth and thoroughly cleaning it. We then gently etch the surfaces before applying the composite resin. As we cure the material under a special light, we will shape and mold the tooth. The last step involves polishing it for a brighter appearance.
We can use the procedure to mask permanent teeth stains, the type that don’t respond to traditional teeth whitening. The material can also help close gaps between the teeth, lengthen worn down teeth, and even repair chips and minor cracks. We can also reshape malformed teeth as well!
Dental Contouring
Dental contouring takes a very different approach. We don’t need to add any new materials or structure to your tooth. instead, we actually sand and buff away outer structure to address minor esthetic issues. For example, we can dull sharp, pointed, or jagged portions of a tooth, and reshape misshapen or overly large teeth. The procedure can also smooth out pits, grooves, and rough patches in the surface, and address minor chips as well. If you have any questions about these procedures, or about any of our other cosmetic treatments, such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers, then contact our team today to learn more.
