Types of Dental Fillings
There are several different types of dental fillings available today. What filling your dentist chooses often depends upon the size and location of the cavity. There was a time when only metal-type fillings were used. Metal fillings are still a good treatment choice for back teeth, especially for people with the chronic habit of clenching and grinding. Gold is the strongest, most long lasting, and durable of the metal fillings. The most popular metal filling, however, has become the silver amalgam filling. This is because it is more affordable, and is also strong, durable, and long lasting.
Composite Fillings
Composite fillings have recently become the most commonly placed dental filling. Composite fillings are a plastic resin material and are naturally white in color so they blend with your teeth. Many dentists prefer composite because the composite material is:
- Hypoallergenic
- Malleable and easy to shape
- Aesthetic
- Also used for cosmetic treatments
Other Types of Fillings
There are other types of fillings, as well, including:
Porcelain Ceramic: Porcelain fillings are often used for inlays and onlays when a regular filling is not sufficient for the size of the cavity. Porcelain inlays and onlays can help strengthen the tooth.
Glass Ionomer Fillings: Glass ionomer fillings are often the treatment of choice for children who have cavities in their primary (baby) teeth. They are a mixture of acrylic and glass that often lasts less than five years. However, glass ionomers release fluoride which can help prevent further tooth decay.
