Often, patients with sore jaws or a popping/clicking sensation in the jaw may be experiencing the common warning signs of TMJ disorder, also known as TMD. How does this disorder impact your smile and what can you do to treat the problem? What causes the onset of jaw joint problems in the first place?
Causes and Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
TMD may occur when the jaw joints undergo immense pressure, which can develop due to misalignment, tooth loss, and injury to the jaw or face. Patients then have problems fully opening and closing their mouth as the disorder develops. Symptoms can include a popping or clicking in the jaw, headaches, jaw pain, or pain in the face, neck, or shoulders. If one or more of these potential symptoms seems familiar to you, then contact our team today. We can diagnose the issue and recommend a solution.
What Is TMJ Treatment?
In most cases, TMJ treatment means wearing an oral appliance. Similar in appearance to a nightguard, the oral appliance is worn as you sleep and repositions the jaw joints to ease strain on them. We may also recommend applying a warm compress to the side of the face or muscle exercises. Orthodontics or restorations can also help address TMD-related problems.
Is There a Connection to Bruxism?
In many cases bruxism, in which patients grind their teeth or clench their jaw, can lead to the onset of TMJ disorder. Likewise, untreated TMD can make the onset of bruxism more likely. These two oral health issues are often linked and can be treated with the same solutions, which include oral appliances, restorations, or orthodontics. If you have any question about treating TMD, or abut bruxism, then contact our office today. We can help ease the pain in your jaw joints!
