What Do I Do In A Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency refers to any pain or injury related to your teeth or gums. As long as the issue isn’t life threatening, then you should contact our office for help. We can treat the issue and restore the health and comfort of your smile. However, there are steps you can take immediately after the injury to help. Let’s look at what to do in a dental emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Emergencies

Question: When should I call?

Answer: As soon as an injury occurs, give us a call. We can schedule a time to see you, even if the injury happens after office hours. We understand that dental emergencies rarely happen at convenient times and are ready to help restore the health and comfort of your smile.

Question: What do I do if I chip a tooth?

Answer: If you chip a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and try to locate any lost pieces. If you find any, bring them to the office with you. Otherwise, don’t worry, we can still repair your tooth. You can hold a cold compress against the side of your face to control the swelling, and use a piece of cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding.

Question: How should I react to a knocked-out tooth?

Answer: First, recover your tooth. Don’t touch the roots, only the crown (the visible portion). Rinse the tooth under gently running water, you want to remove dirt and debris, but not tissue. Then, place the tooth in a glass of milk or salt water. You can try and insert it into the socket and bite down gently to hold in place as well. Again, a cold compress can control swelling and cloth or gauze can help with bleeding.

Question: What if I have unexplained pain in a tooth?

Answer: See us right away. Sudden but severe tooth pain could be assign of an infection or damage to the tooth. Don’t try to use anything other than floss to remove objects caught between teeth, and you can try an over-the-counter pain medication to address the discomfort until you see us.
