When kids are heading back to school, they’ll need new clothes, new supplies, and also, a healthy smile! To help them start day one with bright and healthy smiles, they should attend a checkup and cleaning soon. In today’s blog, your Garland, TX, dentist talks about our back-to-school children’s visits.
Starting School with Healthy Smiles
We want your children to start their first day with a healthy and bright smile. They not only feel confident, but they won’t have to miss classes and extracurricular activities during the year for treatment, at least until their next checkup visit. For example, if your child attends a checkup now and we find a cavity, we can offer treatment in one visit with a dental filling, preventing toothaches and the risk of an infection down the road. Give us a call now to schedule one.
The Checkup and Cleaning
The checkup visit means we will sit down with your child and talk about his or her oral health habits. We then carefully examine the teeth with digital x-rays and intraoral camera images, so we can make a diagnosis with accuracy and precision. We can then identify the presence of issues like tooth decay, infection, and even gingivitis. We also watch for the warning signs of bruxism (teeth grinding), and make sure that primary teeth are falling out on time and that permanent ones erupt properly, which help ensure good alignment.
In the same visit, we will clean the teeth thoroughly with an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool. This removes all plaque and tartar, which not only fights bad breath and stained teeth, but lowers the risk of cavities and gingivitis too. Your kids then start school with bright, healthy smiles!
Preventive Visits for Kids
We can also discuss treatments to lower their risk of tooth decay. For example, we can offer fluoride treatments to strengthen the outer enamel and lower the risk of cavities forming. Application only takes minutes! We also have dental sealants, a special plastic coating we add to the rear teeth to prevent food particles from becoming trapped between teeth. The sealants can stay in place for up to ten years in some cases, protecting the vulnerable portions of these hard-to-reach teeth.
