We don’t just offer care for teens and adults in our community. We have a full range of treatments for little smiles as well! Kids need routine care just like adults do, which is why your Garland, TX, dentist offers children’s dentistry. In today’s blog, we’re going to talk about our treatment options for little smiles.
Checkup and Cleanings for Kids
Children need to see us every six months starting at around age two. A checkup means we can watch the smile as it grows and changes, identifying factors like misalignment, problems with baby teeth falling out or permanent teeth coming in, and the onset of tooth decay and gingivitis. These visits also allow us to help kids better understand their oral health, and instruct them on proper brushing and flossing. Regular visits have also been shown to prevent dental anxiety and make people more likely to continue seeing the dentist in adulthood!
We also clean the teeth, which means gently removing all plaque and tartar with an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool. The process offers a brighter smile and also limits the risk of bad breath, teeth stains, cavities, and even gingivitis. At home, be sure to help your kids with their daily brushing and flossing, as this protects smiles and limits the severity of plaque and tartar in between office visits.
Fluoride Treatments
We also offer fluoride treatments for little smiles too! Essentially, this means we apply a special gel to the teeth during each six-month visit. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that has been shown to help strengthen the outer layers of tooth enamel. This lowers the risk of tooth decay, protecting smiles from toothaches, infection, and premature tooth loss. You also help your kids by ensuring they use a rice-sized bit of fluoride toothpaste when they brush each day.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants also help too! These are a thin acrylic layer we add to the rear teeth, preventing the food particles from becoming stuck between them. This lowers the risk of tooth decay, as kids often have trouble reaching these teeth when they brush and floss. The sealants stay in place for up to 10 years in some cases, and wear away gradually with time. If you have any questions about our approach to children’s dentistry, then contact our team today.
