Kids of all ages, from babies to toddlers and even up to teens, could benefit from our children’s dental procedures. Like adults, kids need to see the dentist too! In today’s blog, your Garland, TX, dentist will help explain how routine care for kids helps prevent issues like cavities, and instill good dental health habits too.
Checkups and Cleanings
Just like you, kids need to see us every six months for a checkup and cleaning visit. The first visit happens around age one, once the first baby tooth erupts. Afterward, we suggest one every six months. We will use advanced digital technology to carefully examine their smiles, watching for the onset of common childhood issues, such as tooth decay, misalignment, baby teeth not falling out on schedule, and other issues. Addressing them quickly helps improve overall alignment and prevent discomfort. During the same visit, we clean the teeth. The cleaning uses an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool to remove all harmful plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth, which further safeguards their smiles against issues like tooth decay and gingivitis.
Fluoride Treatments
We could also suggest a routine preventive treatment every six moths too. In the checkup visit, we can apply a fluoride varnish to the teeth. The application only takes a few minutes, and help strengthen the enamel to protect smiles from cavities. Fluoride actually remineralizes outer enamel to prevent decay. We also suggest kids use a rice-sized bit of fluoride toothpaste when brushing teeth too. Tap water is also a good source of fluoride as well!
Dental Sealants
We also have another unique treatment that helps prevent issues like cavities. For many kids, reaching the rear teeth when brushing and flossing is difficult, so food could remain lodged between the molars. As bacteria consume these particles, the risk of cavities increases. However, with dental sealants we place an acrylic coating on these teeth to prevent anything from becoming stuck between them. They stay in place for years, between five and ten on average, and wear away with time.
