We have a number of restorations to fix your smile, such as fillings to stop decay or root canal therapy to address infections. But with dental crowns, we offer Garland, TX, residents a strong and long-lasting solution to a variety of cosmetic and restorative treatment options. Which type of dental crown will work best for your smile? How do we create and place them?
How Does A Crown Help a Smile?
Unlike other repair options that target a specific area of your tooth, such as fillings, inlays, and onlays, a dental crown fits over the entire visible portion of your tooth. As a result, we address several issues with your tooth’s shape and health. Restorative repairs include addressing advanced decay and infection. We also repair chipped, fractured, or broken teeth. For cosmetic repairs, we may use them to mask teeth stains or reshape malformed teeth. Placement also lengthens worn down teeth, anchors dental bridges in place, and restores single tooth dental implants
In order to place one, we need to make room for them. We begin by removing a small section of tooth structure. We then take detailed impressions, which we use to design and create them. When the patient returns, we place the completed one with a powerful bonding agent. However, the material we use to create them will depend on several different factors.
Metal Restorations
A metal crown offers durability and the ability to withstand serious bite forces. We may reserve these for the side and rear teeth and create them using a number of different metals, such as gold, platinum, palladium, silver, copper, or tin.
PFM and Porcelain Repair Options
For a more lifelike repair, we may recommend porcelain. Able to mimic the translucent appearance of tooth enamel and containing stain-resistant properties, we shade porcelain to match your remaining teeth. We often reserve these for the front facing teeth. However, if we need a lifelike restoration that must endure more pressure, we may recommend porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM), which offers a lifelike appearance while providing the same durability of a metal restoration.
