A dental emergency refers to any injury or compromised restoration or prosthetic that could harm your oral health and could cause issues with your appearance too. To offer relief and prevent complications, your Garland, TX, dentist can treat the issue quickly! We also have a few tips for easing your discomfort.
Looking at Common Dental Emergencies
A dental emergency could be as simple as an unexplained toothache, or could involve a chipped or cracked tooth. An object caught between teeth that floss cannot remove is a concern too, as is a loose or knocked-out tooth. We may recommend a visit if you have a loose or missing crown or filling, or a compromised dental prosthetic. Essentially, any injuries or discomfort that isn’t life threatening is a reason to contact us for an emergency visit! Remember, even if this happens outside of normal business hours, give us a call and we will schedule a time to see you quickly.
Easing Your Initial Pain
Once an injury occurs, you can take steps to ease your discomfort. For example, when a tooth is damaged, try to recover any pieces you can and bring them with you. If a tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown, never the root, and place it in a glass of milk or salt water, and bring it with you. To ease discomfort, be sure you take an over-the-counter pain reliever, and also control bleeding with a cloth or piece of gauze. A cold compress or ice pack could also help by easing swelling. If a restoration is loose or missing, avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks, or items high in sugar, as the tooth will be very sensitive. If you have an ache or something caught between your teeth, gently floss on either side of the tooth and rise with lukewarm water. If this fails to address the issue, then see us right away!
