When Do I Need A Dental Prosthetic?

When you suffer from the loss of one or more teeth, this could lead to serious complications for your overall health. In order to protect the function, health, and beauty of your smile, you may need a replacement option. In today’s blog, your Garland, TX, dentist will talk about how we replace missing teeth with a lifelike and durable dental prosthetic, whether that includes a bridge or a denture.

The Factors Behind Missing Teeth

A number of different factors could lead to missing teeth. When you have advanced decay or infection, this could eventually compromise the tooth. An injury could also lead to gaps in your smile too. The most common cause is the advanced stage of gum disease, known as periodontitis, which could actually sever the tissues that connect your teeth to the gums. When we look at your smile, we will assess the factors behind your missing teeth, and may recommend treatment to better manage these underlying issues.

Creating a Prosthetic

We have a number of options to address varying stages of tooth loss. Each will be created based on detailed digital images and measurements we take of your smile, crafted in a lab setting and fitted for you. The result is a comfortable, long-lasting, and of course, lifelike prosthetic. For between one and three missing teeth in a row, we may use a bridge. The bridge contains new teeth with crowns on either end. We place the crowns on the natural teeth on each side of the gap to secure the denture, which could last 10 to 15 years.

Dentures and Dental Implants

For multiple gaps, we could craft a partial denture, which is held in place with clasps that attach to the natural teeth. A full replaces every tooth on one or both arches, held in place with suction or a special adhesive. These tend to last 5 to 10 years. However, we could also discuss implant dentistry, using a dental implant that acts as a new root. We then attach a crown, bridge, or denture to one or more of these implant posts. This option could last for several decades, and even a lifetime in some cases. If you have any questions about treating tooth loss, or avoid the loss of your natural teeth, then please contact our team today to learn more. We would like to help you and your family maintain a complete smile!
