5 Tips For Maintaining Better Oral Hygiene

  1. Avoid Too Much Sugar:

    When we consume foods and drinks high in sugar, or items with starch, like potato chips, this leaves behind particles on and between our teeth. Bacteria then break down these particles, a process that not only elevates oral acidity, but coats the teeth in a sticky layer of plaque buildup. Brushing and flossing alone cannot remove plaque, and this buildup weakens tooth enamel and inflames gum tissues, which means a higher risk of cavities and gum disease. Instead, opt for healthy choices like water, fruits and veggies, whole grain crackers, yogurt, sugar-free gum, cheeses, and nuts.

  2. Know Which “Healthy” Snacks Aren’t:

    Did you know that fruit juice contains a high amount of sugars for flavor, which could mean an increased cavity risk? While delicious, dried fruits lack the water content that in fresh fruits helps rinse away the sugar content. They also cling to your teeth for bacteria to break down later. Sports drinks, while hydrating the body through electrolytes, also contain acids, which could weaken enamel.

  3. Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day:

    To help cleanse your smile, we suggest brushing your teeth when you wake up and again before going to bed each night. Each session should take about two minutes, and allows you to reduce the severity of plaque buildup and protect the smile. We suggest using a toothbrush with soft bristles, and a toothpaste that has fluoride and the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance on the packaging.

  4. Floss Each Night:

    Along with brushing, you also need to floss up and down each side of each individual tooth to help remove what a toothbrush alone cannot reach!

  5. Tell Us About Your Toothaches:

    If you experience pain in one or more of your teeth, let us know, as this could mean you have a serious cavity or infection that requires treatment. Also, be sure to alert us if your tooth is chipped or cracked.
