How Do I Remove Teeth Stains?

If you have stained teeth, you may feel uncomfortable showing your smile when you laugh or pose for pictures. We know how vital a bright smile is for our patients, and we offer cosmetic care to brighten teeth, often in one visit. In today’s blog, let’s look at how professional treatment can brighten smiles in Garland, TX.

Routine Care

Did you know that routine homecare and office visits could help reduce the severity of teeth stains? Discoloration often becomes visible as a result of plaque buildup, a bacterial byproduct that occurs when bacteria break down food particles. Reducing your consumption of sugary and starchy foods, brushing twice a day for two minutes, and flossing every night before bed can be beneficial. Also, make time to see us every six months, so we can clean your teeth. A professional cleaning removes the plaque and brightens your smile in the process. Also, try to consume fewer beverages with dark pigments, such as red wine, soda, tea, and coffee, which could lead to discoloration as well.

In-Office and At-Home Teeth Whitening

We also have two different forms of teeth whitening available for our patients. Our in-office system can be completed in one to two hours and brighten smiles by several shades. We place a covering over the lips and gums and apply a powerful bleaching gel to the teeth. We activate the gel with a curing light, and the gel begins to break up dental discoloration.

Our at-home option reduces the risk of tooth sensitivity and again brightens smiles by several shades. We first create a set of custom-made plastic trays. We next prescribe a beaching gel. At home, the patients fills the trays with gel and wears them for between 30 and 45 minutes a day. The trays help ensure the gel is spread evenly across the teeth. The total treatment time varies, depending on the extent of your discoloration, but usually takes between a week and ten days.

Bonding and Veneers

While teeth whitening is great at removing surface discoloration, what if the stains form below the tooth enamel? Intrinsic stains, sometimes referred to as permanent discoloration, form below the enamel as a result of injury, fluorosis, or exposure to certain medications at a young age. If we cannot remove these stains, we may mask them with lifelike dental veneers, cosmetic dental bonding, or a combination of these two treatment options.
