3 Steps For Avoiding Gum Disease

Gum Disease can threaten the health and stability of your smile, leading to serious issues, such as adult tooth loss. In younger patients, gingivitis can form that leads to sore, red, and receding gums, and a greater risk of periodontal disease later in life. Fortunately, there are a few steps patients of all ages can take to maintain good gum health and avoid the onset of gum disease.

Avoiding Gum Disease in Three Steps!

  1. Brush and Floss Every Day: A very simple way to maintain a healthy smile! When you brush and floss your teeth, you remove food particles from on and between the teeth. Doing so prevents bacteria from breaking them down, a process that elevates oral acidity and coats teeth in a bacterial byproduct known as plaque. Soon, patients can develop inflamed gum tissue and eventually, gum disease. However, by brushing twice a day and flossing once at night, you can help protect your smile from a serious oral health concern.
  2. Have Your Teeth Professionally Cleaned: While brushing and flossing are essential for avoiding the onset of plaque buildup, only a dental cleaning can remove the buildup. A cleaning involves the use of an ultrasonic scaler or a manual tool to remove plaque from the teeth. Doing so prevents gum inflammation and staves off the onset of periodontal problems. You should have a cleaning about once every six months. However, if you have high risk factors for the disease then we may suggest one every three to four months.
  3. Don’t Smoke: In addition to teeth stains and bad breath, smoking and tobacco usage can increase the risk of periodontitis. The advanced stage of the disease, periodontitis can destroy the connective tissue between the teeth and gums, leading to adult tooth loss. Try to avoid any tobacco products to safeguard your smile!
