How Does A Filling Repair A Tooth?

Last week, we discussed how an aching tooth could be a warning sign of a cavity. Should you develop tooth decay, how can we fix the issue? With a composite dental filling, we can provide a lifelike solution in a single visit. How does a filling repair the tooth? What can we expect from this procedure?

The Causes and Warning Signs of Tooth Decay

A cavity can form as a result of poor oral hygiene, which leads to plaque buildup and a weakening of the tooth enamel. In addition, the issue can be caused by an injury to the tooth, or teeth grinding, which can damage enamel and allow bacteria to reach the inner dentin. Once a cavity forms, you may first notice your teeth feel sensitive to hot or cold foods and drinks. Later, a persistent toothache can form which doesn’t abate after 48 hours.

Placing Dental Fillings

How do we place a filling? First, we need to remove any decay from the teeth. We will then thoroughly clean the tooth. Next, we prepare the composite resin, shading it to ensure once cured, it blends with the tooth. We then apply the material and as it cures under a light, we sculpt and mold the tooth. Finally, we polish the tooth for a more lifelike appearance. The entire procedure, start to finish, only takes a single sitting. Treating a cavity can help protect your smile from further complications, such as a dental infection.

Preventing Future Cavities

In order to help protect your smile from future cavities, we recommend brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, as well as flossing every night before going to bed. We also suggest a visit every six months for a checkup and dental cleaning. To schedule a visit, please contact our office today!
