The City of Garland offers free movies throughout the year at the Plaza Theatre, providing a wonderful way to spend an afternoon or an evening. If you purchase concessions, the proceeds go towards the Good Samaritans of Garland. Plaza Movie Program
The Plaza Theatre, located on the square in Downtown Garland at 521 W. State Street, is owned and operated by the City of Garland through the City’s Plaza Movie Program. Throughout the year, the City offers free movies on a first come, first serve basis. Although there is no price for admission, concessions are offered for sale at $2.00 per item.
The next movie offered is Stagecoach on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 7 PM. Stagecoach is one of John Wayne’s all time classic pictures. Filmed in 1939, and co-starring Claire Trevor, Stagecoach is a story that follows nine people on a dangerous ride through Indian country where the warpath finds Geronimo waiting.
Other movies are slated for October 31, 2014 and December 6, 2014. The October movie has yet to be announced, but the December movie will be Irving Berlin’s classic, White Christmas starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney at 7 PM.
History of the Plaza Theatre
The Plaza Theatre opened on April 4, 1941 on the former location of the Cole & Davis Drygood Store. The facility continued to operate as a theatre until the late 1970’s when it became a music performance space. In 1991, the Plaza Theatre was given to the City of Garland by the Bisby family, who had owned the property since its founding.
Good Samaritans of Garland
Good Samaritans of Garland sell the concessions for $2.00 at the free Plaza Theatre movies. The program assists those in the Garland area who are homeless or poor. Good Samaritans work hard to help eliminate homelessness and hunger in the Garland area.
