What Does Crown Placement Involve?

Last week, we discussed how a dental filling can be used to treat tooth decay. In addition to dental fillings, we also offer a more substantial restoration known as a dental crown. What does placing a crown involve? What damage or oral health concerns can we address using one?

Frequently Asked Questions About Crown Placement

Question: How do you prepare the teeth?

Answer: We will first need to remove a portion of the tooth structure to make room for the restoration. We will then take detailed impressions of the tooth. The impressions will be used at a dental lab to create your crown. You will be provided with a temporary to wear until your final one is complete.

Question: What will the restoration be made from?

Answer: That depends! For teeth near the back of the mouth, which must endure serious bite forces and pressure, we may suggest either metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal (for a more lifelike appearance). Teeth near the front of the mouth are typically repaired with a ceramic one, as these are stain-resistant and look the most natural.

Question: How do you place it?

Answer: After two weeks, you will return to the office. We will remove the temporary and check the fit of your final version. If needed, we can make adjustments before placing it with a powerful bonding agent. In just two visits, we can completely restore your tooth.

Question: What issues can one address?

Answer: We can place one to repair a cracked, chipped, or worn-down tooth. They can also reshape malformed teeth or anchor a dental bridge in place. We can use them to restore a single tooth dental implant as well. If you have any questions about our restorations or if you feel like one is necessary to improve your smile, then please contact our office today.
