5 Tips For Avoiding Cavities

maicavitiesTooth decay affects nearly everyone. In fact, only between 1% and 2% of people are immune to dental caries. Without treatment, a simple cavity can lead to an infection and a higher risk of tooth loss. Are there ways to avoid cavities? What steps can you take to prevent the onset of tooth decay in the first place?

Tips for Avoiding Cavities

  1. Brush correctly: What kind of brush do you use? Your toothbrush should contain soft bristles (brushing too hard with medium to hard bristles can potentially damage enamel). You should also pick up toothpaste with fluoride and the ADA seal-of-approval on the packaging. Brushing your teeth should be done twice a day, once in the morning and again before going to bed, for two minutes per session.
  2. Floss daily: Even more important, you need to floss everyday before going to bed. Floss removes the pieces of food lodged between your teeth. Otherwise, bacteria could break down these food particles and increase the chances of cavities or tooth decay occurring.
  3. Drink more water: When you drink water you stay hydrated and avoid the sugary or acidic content of fruit juices, energy drinks, sodas, or sports drinks. You can then enjoy a healthier smile, one with a much lower risk of developing tooth decay.
  4. Have your teeth examined: Twice a year your dentist should be able to examine your teeth in a checkup. A checkup allows the doctor to identify the possible warning signs of decay, treating the problem before it worsens or causes discomfort.
  5. Undergo routine cleanings: In addition to a checkup, the doctor or hygienist may also perform a cleaning during the same visit. A cleaning removes plaque buildup and tartar from the teeth, protecting your teeth from the onset of tooth decay.
